I made it!!

After a long, cramped flight I finally landed in the Czech republic. The inflight safety video skipped horribly and the lipsyncing was off, but the effect was charming. The dude sitting next to me was nice, but wearing really strong cologne. I read all of the first volume of Maus and played Spore on DS. I tried to sleep but it was really awkward. We flew really close to Iceland and over Great Britain I think.

When I landed, I had a driver waiting for me with a little sign with my name on it. Pretty posh stuff. He listened to bad american pop music the whole way and I kept my eyes glued to the windows. We drove into the city and the architecture got less blocky and soviet and more classical and ornate. We finally made it to Kayla's (the friend I am staying with for the week) and I accidently woke up all her roommates while trying to figure out the buzzer.

We schlepped my heavy luggage up to her fourth-story flat. We had breakfast and then I fell asleep around nine am. I woke up when she got home from work. I have been unintentionally keeping vampire hours, this is pretty harsh jetlag. We went out and got pizza, which was yummy and I couldn't help eating the american way (in my hands). VH1 classics was on, and I saw the new Britney Spears video and some junk from the Jonas bros.

I met a bunch of Kayla's friends and they are all very nice and welcoming. We went to a goth night at a bar called styx. They had these giant mushroom scultures that you can kinda see in this picture. Um, or you will, as soon as I figure out how to post pictures. We took the tram part of the way back and then walked up the hills (Sooo many hills!) to the Blind Eye by Kayla's house.

...Not yet.

Believe it or not, there was a dearth of blogs dedicated to young counter-culture chicks moving to Prague, so here is mine.

My name is Lilly. On November 6th, 2008, I am starting a new life in Prague, teaching English. To quote family guy "I've always wanted to spend a year in Prague teaching English. Slacking off a bit, but really getting to know myself." (I totally stole that from here, but it is apt. I promise it will be the last time I quote Family Guy).

I'm going to get my tefl (teaching english as a foreign language) via a four week course at the Language House. I will live in Zizkov, which from what I gather is Prague's pub-choked punkrock Haight-Ashbury. One of My best friends Kayla absconded for Prague last February, so I will have an expat buddy.

I had to leave my life in Portland, Oregon a week ago. I moved there when I was 18 under the pretense of going to college, and stayed for five of the best years of my life. I am in my homeland of NJ now. Going stir crazy, as I can't drive and there is nowhere within walking distance. I brought my dog Tux from Portland with me, and he will have a lovely retirement home here in Jersey with my parents.

I will probably update this often while pacing around my parent's house for a month. If I could go in stasis for the next few weeks I totally would.
